March Calendar I am very glad to hear that you like the idea of having a checklist of thing that you need to do for the upcoming month. Please send us what else you think should be included or what you do during a particular month and we will publish in our next newsletter and make sure that is included in our next year’s issue. March is the last month of heavy rains in San Diego, spring starts and we should get our gardens ready to be visited by our members in April. Here are some suggested activities: ð Do your grafting. ð Continue to fertilize you citrus and avocados. ð Check to see if you bananas are not started to rot because of the excess water from the rain. ð Continue to control snails. ð Take out those weeds, do not allow them to flower or you shall pay later with more weeds. ð Keep a close eye on the temperature; you may be able to take out those plants out of winter storage. ð Trees start flowering, keep an eye on your fruit trees like cherimoyas; you may have to start hand pollination. ð Screen your compost. ð Heavy pruning for citrus. You may want to share your cutting with Chapter members. ð Check trees for iron and zinc deficiencies. ð One last chance to do light pruning, be careful. ð Time to add mulch to you trees, the more mulch you add the happier your trees will be. Remember City of San Diego has all the mulch you may want for free.
